Summary
Monster Mail is a colorful 3D exploration game where players deliver party invitations to a cast of quirky monsters across a mysterious island. The game mechanics are inspired by the powers and interests of the monsters. It's a simple quest-fetch game with quirky dialogue and lot's of fun!
My Role
As the lead designer and developer on Monster Mail, I was responsible for:
Programming: I built the core systems for interaction, quest tracking, UI behavior, save/load logic, and custom Yarn Spinner integration.
Level Design: I designed all the major play areas, ensuring smooth player flow and environmental storytelling that complemented the characters.
Quest & Narrative Design: I developed all quest structures and wrote dialogue that introduces the monsters’ personalities and encourages exploration.
Music & Audio Integration: I composed the soundtrack and worked closely with the sound designer to ensure audio matched the mood and feedback needs of the game. Besides that I recorded voicelines for the monsters in a studio.
Team Coordination: I served as team lead, organizing sprints, maintaining scope, and making sure technical and creative work aligned throughout the project.
Development Context
The game was developed in Unity over the course of a semester in collaboration with a small interdisciplinary team. The characters were based on real drawings by children, and the final game was exhibited at a public library event, where kids could play the game and recognize their own creations brought to life.
Teamwork
While I focused on design and systems, my team handled art, animation, VFX, and additional programming. Their contributions helped bring polish, personality, and technical depth to the project, making the monsters truly come alive.
